1. Cheers
What better setting for a sitcom than a bar? We could all relate to hanging out and goofing off with other regulars.Sharp writing and a great cast that successfully grew throughout the series’ run helped Cheers stay on the air for a remarkable 11 Seasons, garnering 28 Emmys along the way.Cheers helped NBC own Thursday nights for an entire decade.
2. The Cosby Show
One of the biggest hit shows of the 80s, The Cosby Show left it’s mark on television. Eight years, over two-hundred episodes, (only!) two Emmys, two Golden Globes, and an endless supply of sweaters and hoagies.
3. Seinfeld
Arguably the most culturally significant sitcom of all time. Jokes and scenes from Seinfeld had ways of becoming jokes between you and your friends, family, co-workers, and total strangers. It felt as if each episode had an immediate impact on pop culture. Jerry, Elaine, George and Kramer are four of the funniest characters ever, and their exploits still linger in our memories today.
4. Friends
The show’s plot was simple: following the lives of six New York City friends as they navigate through their twenties. What Friends work was the instant chemistry the cast had from the pilot on, the impeccable writing, and smart direction. It’s also a show that still resonates with today’s generation of young television fans.
5. Scrubs
Running from 2001-2010, Scrubs took place in the fictional Sacred Heart Hospital. Narrated by Dr. John “J.D.” Dorian (Zach Braff), the cast of memorable characters is vast, from his best friend, surgeon Christopher “Chocolate Bear” Turk (Donald Faison) to J.D.’s nemesis The Janitor (Neil Flynn).
6. Married with Children
Married With Children centered around an ex-high school football great turned shoes salesman, his big-haired red-headed wife who spends more time on the couch watching Oprah than with their children- two of the worst kids in TV history. Put it all together and you’ve got one funny TV show.
7.Community
Any comedy that devotes an episode sending up the Apocalypse Now documentaryHearts of Darkness AND has an animated 30-minute G.I. Joe homage gets a special place in my top ten. The meta-rific Community has done send ups of Goodfellas, zombie films and even had an entire episode done in the style of an 8 bit video game. This show speaks to me as movie fan and nerd, has quickly become one of my favorites, and much like Arrested Development will be missed and admired when its gone.
8. Arrested Development
Michael Bluth finds himself forced to stay in Orange County and run the family real estate business after his father, George Bluth Sr., is sent to prison for committing white-collar crime. He tries to juggle the wants and needs of his spoiled and eccentric family while being a good role model for his teenage son, George Michael.
9.Full House
This is my personal favorite.I remember the days when I couldn't wait for Friday, I was just 2 years old when Full House began, but I remember for some odd reason just watching this show from day one. Full House has always brought back great memories for me, it's the one show I absolutely loved as a child and couldn't miss.
10.How I Met Your Mother
Throughout the history of television there have been a number of sitcoms centered around a group of 20 or 30-something friends. Behind Friends, How I Met Your Motheris one of the best sitcoms based on that format.
